Gulu Peace Garden

Over the past few weeks, the members of GSSAP have had the privilege of getting to know Olel Emmy Wokoracht, a Gulu University student.  He has been hard at work developing his Gulu Peace Garden Project, a fantastic urban garden right in the midst of Gulu-town.  Here, he and I are standing in front of the gates to the compound where his family lives and where his garden is located.

As you can see, he has quite a variety of plants growing, from bushes to herbs to fruits
and all sorts of things in-between.

Here is Emmy's "laboratory," where he is keeping small, young plants to protect them from the elements.

Just recently, Emmy acquired some new, nutrient soil and he is putting it to good use already.
The piece of metal on the right protects them from the rain (it rains really hard here!)

One of the greatest things about the garden is how old cups, bottles and bags are being recycled
to create something both beautiful and useful.

He also is raising rabbits and guinea pigs in nearby pens.
Instead of throwing away the parts of plants that cannot be used by humans,
he feeds it to the animals: just one more way to promote conservation and recycling.

If you want to see more of his garden and learn about all the different plants he is growing,
be sure to visit his blog: peacegardeninggulu@blogspot.com.
